Remove Creases and Fold Lines from Document Photos

A folded document is a common problem. Contracts stored in a wallet, certificates mailed in an envelope, passports bent by daily use — when photographed, the fold lines show clearly. PhotoToScan's AI removes them automatically.

Upload a photo of your folded or wrinkled document. The AI detects the crease, removes the shadow it casts, corrects the subtle text distortion at the fold line, and returns a result that looks like the document was scanned flat.

Why fold lines ruin document photos

A flatbed scanner presses the document against glass, keeping it perfectly flat. When you photograph a folded document, the fold creates two problems at once:

  • A shadow along the fold line. The crease raises the paper slightly, casting a dark line on one or both sides of the fold.
  • Perspective distortion at the fold. The two halves of the document are at slightly different angles from the camera. Text and lines near the fold appear to converge or shift.

Both problems compound each other: a dark band with misaligned text running across an otherwise readable document — exactly the kind of artifact that causes digital submissions to be flagged or rejected.

How crease removal works

PhotoToScan's model approaches crease removal in two steps:

  • Crease detection. The model identifies fold lines by looking for linear shadow patterns combined with subtle geometric discontinuities in the document surface. It distinguishes fold lines from printed lines — like table borders — by analyzing the shadow gradient and paper texture on either side.
  • Surface reconstruction. Once the fold is identified, the model removes the shadow cast by the raised paper edge, realigns the content on either side of the fold to correct distortion, and reconstructs the paper color and texture across the crease to produce a seamless result.

The model specifically does not remove printed lines, ruled lines, or table borders — only physical fold and crease shadows that have gradient edges and paper texture disruption.

How to use it

  • Step 1 — Upload your document photo (JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP)
  • Step 2 — PhotoToScan automatically detects and removes crease lines
  • Step 3 — Preview the result, then download as JPG or PDF

Common use cases

  • Passports and ID documents. Passports bent in bags and wallets develop horizontal creases across the bio-data page, making the photo and text hard to read in digital copies.
  • Contracts and agreements. Printed contracts tri-folded to fit in envelopes arrive with three parallel crease lines running across the text.
  • Certificates and diplomas. Mailed certificates arrive folded. For digital submissions to employers or institutions, fold lines read as unprofessional.
  • Bank statements and bills. Paper statements folded in envelopes are frequently needed for address verification — a clean scan is required.
  • Old documents and records. Historical documents stored folded for years develop deep creases that need to be removed to make the content fully readable when digitized.

Frequently asked questions

Can it handle documents folded multiple times?
Yes. The model handles single folds, bi-folds, and tri-folds — the format common in mailed letters and contracts.
Will it remove printed lines like table borders?
No. The model distinguishes between fold-line shadows (gradient edges, paper texture disruption) and printed lines (sharp, consistent edges). Printed content is preserved.
Can it remove wrinkles, not just straight fold lines?
Yes. The same model handles general paper wrinkling from moisture, rough storage, or heavy use — not just straight fold lines.
What if the crease shadow is very dark?
Very dark shadows reduce the accuracy of text recovery in that region, but the model still removes the shadow and reconstructs the area using surrounding context. For best results, photograph under diffuse lighting before uploading.
Does crease removal work on passports?
Yes. Passports with horizontal creases across the bio-data page are one of the most common use cases. PhotoToScan removes the crease from the photo of the document.
